WOODWINDS & BRASS
These instruments are the backbone of many different types of bands that musicians can participate in throughout their life, including concert bands, marching band, wind ensembles, jazz bands and many more. These instruments are varied in design and sound, and offer many choices for the beginning instrumentalist. The sounds from wind and brass instruments are initiated by pushing air through the instrument.
AGE TO START
Children should be at least 9 years old to physically handle these instruments. They are not available in smaller sizes like violins and guitars. The arms and fingers must be large and long enough to reach keys and cover holes. Also, the breath quantity and control needed to produce a tone require physical maturity, coordination and patience! Unfortunately our local schools do not offer band and orchestral instrument study until grade 6, but at music.4.life, we can give your child a good start on these instruments before they reach middle school.
WIND INSTRUMENTS
BRASS INSTRUMENTS
The brass family consists of five major metal instruments, the Trumpet/Cornet, the French Horn, the Trombone, the Baritone/Euphonium, and the Tuba/Sousaphone . Referred to as aerophones, the player’s lips buzz against the mouthpiece of the instrument, which is funnel shaped. Most brass instruments are long tubes that have been twisted or shaped, ending in a bell-like end. Some instruments also have valves to alter the length of the tubing, or in the case the trombone, a long slide.
