DRUMS & PERCUSSION
There are many different types of drums from every different culture throughout the world. Simply described as a skin stretched over a tube, drums have a rich history and come in every shape and form. From the hand drums to the djembe, to the timpani and drum sets, drums play a part as a supporting framework for musical adventure.
DRUM KIT
A drum kit (also drum set, or trap set) is a collection of percussion instruments including bass drum, floor tom, snare drum, tom-toms, and a variety of cymbals. Additional instruments such as cowbells, wood blocks, triangles, chimes, or tambourines, to name a few.
The drums are arranged to be played by a seated drummer with different types of implements including drumsticks, mallets or brushes. The bass drum, however, is played with the foot by a pedal on the floor.
PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS
Percussion instruments are at their simplest are those which one beats, shakes or vibrates in different manners, depending on the design. Too numerous to list, they fall into a number of categories, including pitched (xylophone, bells) and non-pitched, shaken (maracas), struck (i.e., woodblocks and claves) and vibrating (cymbals).
AGE TO START
Tappping out a rhythm on a drum can start early at music.4.life, as even our babies get into drum playing in their Kindermusik classes. But formal drum lessons really don't start until a child is much older. Drumming students usually fall into several categories driven by the student's interest, which might include the trap set, school band percussion section, drumming circles or high school drum lines.
music.4.life offers drum lessons on a full trap drum kit (not an electronic pad) taught by our experienced performer and teacher, Brian Sullivan. He also teaches percussion techniques for other rhythm instruments.
